When your car airbags open

Airbags opens on a very complex system, which is triggered by the type of impact and the speeds and if your body is heavy or light.

Few manufactures program the car’s ECU to decide in the fraction of seconds if the airbags are to be deployed or not to prevent any unwanted injury to the head. for some models and manufacturers it is required for the seat belts to be fastened as the sensors and in a few models there is a motor inside to reel back and hold you in place.

First point to know is that Air Bags are not meant to be the primary safety mechanism. By design the safety bags will protect you by preventing impact on your body from your chest and above and are SUPPLEMENTARY UNITS TO PREVENT INJURY TO HEAD OR CHEST from the steering or dashboard or glass or anything else.

CASE: Imagine “a car moving at a speed of 120 or above”, now note that all accidents take a fraction of second to happen and will reduce the speed of the vehicle from 120 to 0 in that IMPACT.

the directive to wear a seat belt has been announced! One used to wonder wearing a seat-belt in an automobile was considered so important by all. It was something unheard of in India. Somehow, although we were good at aping all the bad qualities of the Western world, we refused to take some good tips from them, especially on the driver and passenger safety. Until now.

The endeavour of any driver is to avoid collisions, however, crashes do happen. Seat belts and airbags make it possible to survive collisions that could have otherwise resulted in serious, if not fatal, injuries.

They are estimated to save over 9,500 lives each year worldwide and the next one could be you. When lap and shoulder belts are used correctly, they reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45 per cent and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50 per cent.
